Would I need to re-checkin at Heathrow when transfering?

Well..this trip is planned a little bit messy... Okay..first of all, we booked a free ticket (asia miles redeem) for LHRYYZ(BA). After that, when the ticket came out, we suddenly decided to travel to France first, and then just in one time transfering at LHR to YYZ. The problem is now..these two tickets are not booked in the same trip. So..do I have to re-check in..that means taking my bags..etc when I am at Heathrow? If you want to ask which airline I am taking for the trip to France, I think I would take some budget airlines (like easyjet). Does that makes a difference? I heard from someone that you must always recheckin with budget airlines..PLEASE HELP!! Also..I have only got a Canadian passport.

  1. The budget airlines don't fly to Heathrow (at least EasyJet doesn't), so you'll have to collect your bags and get on a bus and change airports - this will take at least 3 or 4 hours. You might want to get the second ticket with your same airline leaving from Heathrow, if not take the Eurostar. And either way, if there's a flight delay, your screwed, so plan some padding into your schedule, the train is good because if there are no delays you can just spend a few extra hours in London.
  2. Normally when you have bought flights seperately, and especially when with different airlines, you have to collect your bag, and check in to the second flight. In Heathrow this will mean lots of queues. However, a los of bags are lost or delayed when you change planes - and heathrow has a bad reputation for this. The BIG advantage of collecting your bag and checking on to the flight to France is that you KNOW your bag is going with you - and I think it is worth braving the queues just for this. Anyone who plans to change planes, without collecting and rechecking thier luggage should always have some clothes in thier handluggage just in case! Just check that there is plenty of time between flights to collect your luggage, move to the terminal where your next flight leaves, queue for check in, and queue for security. If your first flight is delayed, and you are running out of time, don't be afraid to go to the front of the check in queue, and ask staff to help you skip the security queue - if you have a boarding pass that leaves soon, they will let you do this. Hope this helps
