I need help with Amtrak!!!?

My husband and I are celebrating our first wedding anniversary the beginning of this month. We are both military so we already get a discount.... but we are traveling across country so the tickets are way over 600 for both of us. We never even went on a honeymoon because we couldn't afford one.... so this is kind of like a honeymoon for us. We get a discount on the seat fare.... but not the accomodations. Since we are going to be on the train for a couple of days, we want the roomette thing. Is there anyone that has worked for amtrak as a conductor that knows the deal with how amtrak works? I'd like to have my husband get the roomette suite(no cost for extra person... but i still get charged for base fare) and I'll just get the coach ticket just to get on the train, ..... only from our first stop til a few stops later, just until i can get to the roomette. Is there a window in the roomette suite where a captain could see me? Whats the worst thing that could happen if he does? Just make me pay the fare? Also, if we find family to loan us money so that we can get the room from the get go.... do you think we could make love? I mean we are still newlyweds and will be together on a train for a couple of days...hopefully there is no window. As far as baggage goes, you are aloud a few bags and he can just say my bag is his and i have no luggage. I know it's not right... but we can't afford to fly. I just lost my job because of the economy and he is struggling. This is why we are staying inside the US for our anniversary. We are only like $200 short.... but just in case we can't get the money we need other options. If anyone has any help or knowledge please message us, thanks. Please don't judge.

  1. You will each have to pay a fare for the transportation itself, and then you will pay for one roomette. A roomette has two bunks, and is made to accomodate two adults. You will not be charged extra for being two people to a room. Say, for example, the fare is $100, and the roomette costs $200, you would pay $400 (2x100 + 200). If you were one person, it would cost $300 (1x100 + 200). There's no reason to be "sneaky" about it, but make sure you buy both tickets together, and tell Amtrak that you'll be two people in the room. If you purchase your ticket for only a coach seat, you will not be permitted to enter the sleeping cars. _EDIT: Concerning your question about making love on a train, a roomette might be kind of cramped. You might consider buying a full family bedroom, if you can get the funds, or even two bedrooms together, so you could take out the wall and have basically a queen-sized bed. I don't know about Amtrak, but VIA Rail offers a service called "Romance by rails" made specifically for honeymooners like yourself, where you get a huge room with a king-size bed, bouquet of roses, and bottle of champagne, as well as a nightly turn-down service, and complimentary chocolate and more champagne.
  2. The roomette is charged a flat rate, not per person. I guess you could make love, but if other passengers complain about the noise, the conductor may tell you to stop.
